PM: Malaysia will explain to Australia on Anwar's case
KUALA LUMPUR:The Malaysian Government through Wisma Putra will explain the real situation to the Australian MPs who had called for the sodomy case against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to be dropped, said the Prime Minister.
“We will explain and engage with the Australian MPs. Wisma Putra will handle it. I don’t think they know about the real situation,” said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak when attending the Gerakan Chinese New Year open house here Sunday.
Najib said this when asked to comment on Australian MPs who had lodged a formal protest urging Malaysia to drop the sodomy charge in the interest of building “confidence in the impartial rule of law in Malaysia.”
Almost 60 Australian MPs, including frontbenchers from both sides of the divide, signed a letter in support of Anwar.
The chairman of Australian Parliament’s foreign affairs subcommittee, Michael Danby, delivered the letter to the Malaysian High Commission in Canberra recently.
Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman had on Saturday issued a statement saying that the Malaysian High Commission in Canberra would clarify the facts of the sodomy case to the Australian MPs.
Barisan Nasional bankbenchers deputy chairman Datuk Rahman Dahalan said the Australian MPs had no right to interfere and that the Malaysian judiciary was impartial and capable of handling such issues.
